Cash flows and their characteristics drive value in financial planning models. The fundamental idea behind valuing a project or plan is to bring future cash inflows and outflows to their present value, which depends on how big those cash flows are, when they occur, and how certain (risky) they are. If a model ignores the size, risk, and timing of cash flows, it treats all cash movements as if they were the same or as if they happened now, which distorts the valuation. A small cash inflow far in the future may be worth much less than a larger near-term inflow, and a highly uncertain cash flow should be discounted more heavily to account for risk. By not capturing these aspects, the model can misprice projects and lead to poor capital allocation. While benchmarks, financing structure, and tax considerations matter in practice, they don’t replace the core need to model cash-flow size, risk, and timing accurately.
